The Collegian’s (divided) take on Central Hallapalooza

Was Central Hallapalooza worth the cost?

The Collegian editors were evenly split when discussing this question, and we believe our own division probably echoes a similar division in the whole campus.

According to senior Caitlin Agoston of Student Activities Board, Central Hallapalooza had a budget of $10,000 but cost, overall, around $9,000. This amount resembles that which was spent on earlier events this year such as the garden party and the President’s Ball.

One of our editors, dismayed at the amount spent on Hallapalooza, said that “We probably could have sponsored a couple hundred Compassion International children for a year with the funds from the Hallapalooza.”

Another of our editors said she felt the event was not worth $9,000 and she would rather see our student fees used in other ways—or at least see less money spent on any future Central Hallapaloozas, perhaps by having only our own bands play.

One editor said Student Activities Board could improve future Central Hallapaloozas by pulling in better bands—and by having activities that more than a few people could participate in at one time, thus avoiding a “Central Line-apalooza.”

Some of our editors had a more positive perspective on Central Hallapalooza. A few said that the cost of the event seemed reasonable when compared to other major campus events and that these events and the efforts to put them on are worth the money because they improve college life at Hillsdale.

For the most part, our editorial staff agreed that Student Activities Board has done an excellent job this year by creating events that draw the entire campus together.

“I think it’s hard to appeal to students on this campus,” one of our editors said. “We all tend to want to remain holed-up in our rooms studying, and we rarely make time for stuff like a movie on the Quad, but I think it’s a good effort by the group.”
