“GINA” Relays begin today for track

As they approach the end of their seasons, the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams are still going strong.

Last weekend they competed in the Jack Shaw Clasic at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Although both Hillsdale teams scored well below larger schools including Grand Valley State, Western Michigan and Central Michigan Universities, there were many strong individual performances.

Seniors DiOnna Williams and Sara Monteleone led the women, both earning provisional qualifying status for the NCAA national meet.

Williams finished 6th in the 100-meter run with a time of 24.75.

Monteleone took 2nd in the discus throw, setting a new school record and earning provisional qualifying status at 44.42 meters. She also took 5th in the hammer throw at 46.41, setting a new personal best in that event, as well as finishing 3rd in the shot put at 13.12.

Freshman Andrew Dodson and junior Peter Ulrickson led the men, taking first place in the high jump (1.96m) and the triple jump (12.72m), respectively.

Other top-five performances for the Charger women were senior Carrie Douglas in the 800 (2nd, 2:17.27) and sophomore Kristin Donovan in the javelin throw (2nd, 36.14m).

The men’s 1600 relay team ‘A’ took first with a time of 3:23.11.

Other top-five finishers for the men included sophomore Blake England in the 200 (2nd, 22.69) and senior Cody Senkyr in the 110 hurdles (5th, 15:54) and 400 hurdles (4th, 58:78).

Senior Charles Henry (50.48) and junior Cody Calligan (52.29) took 2nd and 5th, respectively, in the 400, while freshmen Luke Preus (2:04.49) and Dennis Walton (2:04.63) took 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the 800.

This weekend the teams will compete in the 40th annual “GINA” Relays, an invitational track meet held on the Ken Harrick track. “I can’t wait until the ‘GINA’ Relays get started,” Head Coach Bill Lundberg said. “It’s going to be a wonderful event again this year.”

Lundberg said more than 1,500 athletes have registered to compete in the meet, including over 100 teams.

A number of individuals from the college and community will also take part in the Wyld Bill 5k to benefit the Hillsdale area Wyld Life program. The road race will begin at 10 a.m. and finish on the track to kick off the main day of the relays.
