Students party disco-style

Freshman Jack Shannon gets groovy with some sweet moves at the Disco Party Saturday.

Freshmen Jake Donovan and Betsy Stone, and sophomores Aliza Kwiatek and Lauren Brumley dance underneath the glow of the disco balls.

Disco balls, lava lamps, candy necklaces and groovy tunes appeared at the Student Activities Board-sponsored Disco Night on Saturday. The dance took place in the Knorr Student Center and brought back memories of time when sofas sported green, orange and purple all in the same slip cover and when playing games such as Twister, Sorry and Monopoly was the hip way to spend a Friday evening.

The SAB said it chose the disco theme because it had not been done for a while and it was easy for students to dress up for.

“We were brainstorming ideas for the winter, which is difficult because the weather is so unpredictable,” Student Activities Director Katy Crissman said. “We thought that a decade would be fun and the ‘70s leaves a lot of room for creativity.”

Typical dress consisted of sequined tops, large shirt collars, platform shoes, bellbottoms, and Farah Fawcett-style feathered hair.

“The disco era is a fun era; it is easy to dance to and easy to dress to,” freshman SAB member Jim Musgrave said.

The disco party was true to its theme from the music to the food. Music ranged from the well-known song “YMCA” to “The Hustle” and “Dancing Queen.” The food included Faygo soda in many fruity flavors, chips and dip, Candy Dots, candy necklaces and Laffy Taffy.

“There were a lot of fun disco songs and everyone dancing was having a blast,” Musgrave said. “All of the candy and food was popular in the ‘70s; it was a lot of sugar.”

Student reactions to the disco were positive.

“It has been fantastically awesome,” freshman Jack Shannon said. “The dancing is amazing and I would not want to be anywhere else.”

The SAB sponsors events like the disco party to promote student interaction and as an opportunity to do something unique on a Saturday night.

“Our purpose is to create events that unite the whole student body and are something for everybody to enjoy,” senior SAB member Caitlin Agoston said.

The student body can look forward to other SAB-sponsored events this semester such as The President’s Ball, more bowling nights, and an end-of-the-year party.
