Christmas has taken over nearly every aspect of our lives, and most importantly, our shopping. With finals coming up, it’s hard to take the time to do what some perceive much more productive than studying — Christmas shopping. This guide will give you the proper tools that every college student dreams of — quick tips and hints for how you can make your holiday shopping as easy as putting away mug after mug of Egg Nog.
Step one in this process is being prepared. We all know at least one person in our lives who goes shopping on Christmas Eve. Bad idea! I suggest that while you have a free minute from your studying, take that time to jot down a few gift ideas. This way when you finally get a chance to spend the little amount of money you have, you will have a general idea of what to get your loved ones. Does this list have to be detailed in every aspect? No. But let’s be honest…it’s better to walk onto a football field with a game plan than trying to run plays without any preparation. And in the same regard, it’s better to go shopping with a game plan.
Now that you have your list, let’s look at the items that occupy it. How are you going to buy for your family AND all of your friends here at school?!! Remember the old saying that gifts from the heart mean more than anything. Moms and Dads know that you’re in college. Hello! There’s a good chance they’re helping you pay for it! That being said, they don’t expect you to buy them expensive gifts. But what about that special someone? Here’s the best suggestion for you if you’re in a relationship—when your significant other asks you what you want for Christmas, don’t say “nothing.” We all know that’s a lie! You don’t have to be specific, but suggestions are helpful. Special note to guys: if you are completely lost, ask her friends. They know her in a different way than you do, and will most likely be able to give you insight you never thought existed.
So now we have our lists and ideas. When do you have time to shop? Again I say, do not wait until the last minute!! Waiting until the last minute only adds to your stress and makes your holly jolly Christmas not so jolly. If you run out of time to buy for your friends on campus, remember that online shopping is a fabulous option. And let’s face it, who doesn’t love to receive a box in the mail? If you do have time to shop, I suggest going early in the day. Not only is your mind fresh, but you can avoid that mid-morning rush, as well as the after-work craziness at the mall.
Finally, here are some helpful hints for your shopping! First, be polite and courteous with other people, ESPECIALLY the sales clerks. Remember that their job is to help you and that they would probably prefer doing what you’re doing. A simple “Merry Christmas!” to a sales clerk will make their day so much brighter, and it will make you feel good about yourself. Second, take advantage of the free gift wrapping that many stores provide. Third, be creative in your gift-giving ideas, and take joy in your giving. It is such a special feeling to see the look on someone’s face when they open your gift. And finally, remember the reason that we are celebrating the season. Put aside all the hustle and bustle and take time to celebrate the true joy that is Christmas.
