Season ends on high note

The men's golf team closed their 2004 fall season two weeks ago at the GLIAC Conference Tournament.

Going into the second day of competition, Hillsdale was in 10 th place out of 11 teams. But the team stormed back to finish seventh place overall with a combined score of 953.

"We played really well Sunday compared to the rest of the field, beating seven out of the 11 teams," coach Sam Hargraves said. " All five of the guys competed well, they were all ready to play and were excited about the challenge."

Leading the way for the Chargers was junior Rob Schlitts, who finished and tied for 11 th overall.

"I played pretty consistently," Schlitts said. "Nothing special, just consistent."

Hillsdale also received solid efforts from freshmen James Burns, who finished and tied for 13 th , and Chris Eliason, who tied for 41 st .

"I played well and I am glad I was able to help the team," Burns said. "I have learned a lot and hope that my experiences will help in the spring."

The conference tournament concluded a fall season in which the team consistently improved and gained some valuable experience for their young players.

"The improvements we made this fall were outstanding," Hargraves said. "We have had a steady improvement of the last four fall seasons."

"Our team is really starting to come together," Schlitts said. "Our team has really gelled and it should be an exciting spring season."

Because of their successes during the fall season, the team is expecting big things for the spring season.

"I think this team is capable of competing with the best teams in the conference," Burns said. "We are young, and we will only get better."
