For many of you who have experienced the inconvenience of carrying 50 books back to the library just to renew them and then carry all 50 back to your dorm, the library has made some new changes that will alleviate your woes.
In addition to sending out courtesy notice emails reminding students when their books are due, the Michael Alex Mossey Library will now be offering online renewals.
By accessing the Main Catalog page, you will be given the option to “View your circulation record/Renew items” under “My Library.” The system will ask you for your name and the bar code on the back of your identification card.
Once you are logged in, you will be able to renew books, DVDs, compact discs and all audio-visual material. The books will be renewed longer than the media, for another 21 days, or until another student requests the book, in which case your due date might be shortened.
“The students that know about it are excited, it is very user friendly,” said Mary Barnett, assistant to circulation.
Fines will still be issued for items not returned, and they will be increased to $1 for items that were renewed but not returned when requested. The library will send notices to students informing them when their renewed items are due.
“Now students won't have to haul 50 books back up, especially for those doing the thesis,” Public Services Librarian Linda Moore said. “It just means, though, that students will have to reserve books ... some students may have stuff they are not using.”
