Hillsdale "Brown
Shirts"
Dear Editor,
In reading some of the editions of the Collegian
as well as the letters to the editor, I am reminded of an encounter
that I had with someone three or so years after I graduated
from Hillsdale. This person told me that they had heard of Hillsdale
(this is from a general middle of the roader) and that their
peers had referred to people from Hillsdale as Brown Shirts
(as in Hitler Youth). Basic message is, don't push it too hard.
You'll lose your ability to influence and be looked at as a
bunch of freaks and idiots. I'm not saying to go massive left
wing or compromise yourselves, but mellow out, folks. You are
starting to embarrass your alums.
Sincerely,
Dave Kellogg, class of '83
Collegian vastly improved
Dear Editor,
I've been meaning to write all year and send
the Collegian staff my compliments on the vast improvements
in the paper since last year. I think I am not alone in enjoying
the witty commentary, clear writing, diverse opinions and interesting
news coverage which the Collegian now gives us every
week.
My compliments to columnists such as Dave Frank, Jacob Harrison,
John Davidson, Elliot Wild and the rest of the crew of capable
and amusing writers who have made the Collegian interesting
again. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Heidi C. Morris, junior
Dave Frank out of line
Dear Editor,
My name is Pete Christie. I fully support
Phil Monahan and his wrestling promotion C.I.W. I have been
a pro wrestler since 1991 and have worked for many promotions
in Texas and Michigan. C.I.W. is by far one of the best promotions
I have ever worked for. There are always top-rate athletes and
good crowds and professionalism at all the shows I have been
lucky enough to work.
The article written by Dave Frank was out of line. Maybe he
thinks he blew the lid off something major. The crowd that night
was hot from the opening match till the end, everyone sure seemed
to love it except your roving reporter. Maybe he should ask
a few opinions on the show before telling his side next time.
Sincerely,
Pete Christie
Ignore Chairman Cisco
I'm an independent. I don't like Mike Francisco
and his movement because he and it are extreme and getting worse.
He's an idealist, much like Karl Marx, only on the other side
of the spectrum. He's a real self inflicted Compassionate Christian
Conservative. Being the figurehead of a movement on a small
campus gives me just enough information to judge him.
He has a strong ambition to rule others. People who are ambitious
and extreme make great tyrants. If we lived in North Korea,
Chairman Francisco would have a better chance of successfully
ruling. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for the rest
of us, we are in the land of the free.
Minions such as Ivan Heitmann, Victor Joecks, etc., got it all
wrong when they enlisted their support for Chairman Francisco.
Francisco will end up tyrannizing his closest associates when
he doesn't win absolute control.
What is right? Francisco doesn't know. His beliefs are incongruous
to the traditions of this college in particular and the liberal
arts in general. In the end his movement will lose to the pursuit
of the liberal arts and the restrictive nature of this college
will cease once people ignore him and the other extremists.
If the administration likes Francisco (they would), they will
give him a full refund for his education. Don't feel ashamed,
Hillsdale, you did your best. Francisco's obstinacy against
the essence of liberal arts overcame the efforts of the college.
Just as Alcibiades didn't take the education of Socrates seriously,
Francisco refused liberal arts. I believe we should follow the
example of the Athenians against Alcibiades. We should marginalize
Francisco. In short, ignore him.
Sincerely,
Gino Tozzi, senior
