Community rallies around Teetor

The Hillsdale equestrian team sponsored an exhibition last Thursday for the college and community. Approximately 100 people showed up for the event that featured Hillsdale's team, as well as the local 4-H Rough Riders equestrian team.

Hillsdale's team helps the Rough Riders, which is a local group of kids ages 6 to 19 with approximately 25 active members. The equestrian team gets riding time in exchange for their help with the group.

Team co-adviser Deb Johnson explained different styles of jumping to the audience, along with some jumping strategy. Nationals-bound junior Betsy Teetor demonstrated jumping techniques as the crowd looked on.

"We want to promote awareness for the team and gather some support," Johnson said. "Plus, Betsy's accomplishments are great for the whole team. She'll represent Hillsdale College on a national level, which hasn't happened for them yet."

Many local children came out with their parents to meet the riders and ride the horses. The equestrian team also arranged for ponies to accommodate the younger riders.

"I like the way they jump," said Judy Moreno, 7, daughter of Paul Moreno, associate professor of history. "I really like horses and ponies the same."

Sophomore Andrea Baumer said getting the community involved is very important to the future of the equestrian team.

"By doing this kind of thing, we hope to eventually become affiliated…an official NCAA sport," she said.

Senior Deanne Hunt, president of the equestrian team, said they greatly appreciated the support of all the attendees.

"We really appreciate the fact that people came and supported what we do," she said.

Approximately 100 people showed up last Thursday to wish junior Betsy Teetor (above) good luck at next month's national competition.
