Sayers on the Sidelines

TIGER GOES COMMANDO

Tiger Woods will soon be spending a week at Fort Bragg, N.C., in order to undergo a week of intense military training.

To me, this little escapade appears to be nothing more than a publicity stunt for Woods who has been a disappointment for some time. After being in a slump--he has not won a major tournament in two years--Tiger needed some way to get the attention back on him, rather than on a certain rival, like Phil Mickelson, who just happened to win his first major title ever at the Masters last weekend.

Tiger is supposed to endure a normal week of training, including attacking the assault courses and participating in weapons drills. It ought to be fun to watch Tiger spend 15 minutes lining up his shots while he scopes out the target from every possible angle.

And what will the Army receive out of this adventure? Tiger has promised to give an hour-long personal golf instruction for eight youngsters who won a contest, followed by a skills demonstration.

MELO OVER LEBRON

The NBA's regular season is winding down, and that means it's finally time to pick this year's Rookie of the Year.

And the winner is….Carmelo Anthony.

Both Melo and LeBron have similar stats--21 points and six rebounds per game--and both are solely responsible for the improved level of play on their respective teams.

But the difference- maker is whose team is going on to the post-season, and that is the Denver Nuggets.

While Melo and the Nuggets are playing at home, LeBron is going to be watching the game from his home.

Melo took a team that won only 18 games last year to end up qualifying for the playoffs in the Western Conference.

It's not like LeBron's Eastern Conference, where sub-.500 teams still have hopes of making the postseason. Melo's Nuggets secured the eighth and final spot, knocking out Utah and Portland, who have been in the playoffs every year for the past 20 years.

FARMHOUSE 5K THIS WEEKEND

This Saturday, at the Sports Complex, the 3rd annual Farmhouse 5k will begin at 10 a.m. There is a registration fee of $15.

I would like to encourage everyone to attend, because it will definitely be a lot of fun. Sure, it i 3.1 miles, but how far is that? really?

There will be a barbecue afterwards, so bring $5 extra because, believe me, you will be hungry after the race.

And if none of these things tempt you, remember that just by registering, you'll get one of the coolest T-shirts ever. I'll see you there.
