Games, pool table welcome additions
We would like to thank Father Duane Beauchamp
and the Student Activities Board for adding arcade games and
a pool table to the student union and snack bar. These simple
additions are already popular among the student body, bringing
more people into the union and providing welcomed and needed
distractions from too much studying.
However, the best thing about installing these
games is that it addresses an obvious problem with our campus:
There is no social center. In fact, there is very little in
the way of a social scene in general. Not only do many students
complain that they are often bored, that there is "nothing
to do in Hillsdale," but many groups and individuals are
also isolated or disconnected. Complaints come from all quarters;
you don't have to be super cool to realize that our campus could
use some loosening up.
At one time there was talk of building a campus
pub for faculty and legal-age students to gather and engage
in responsible drinking. We would like to hear such talk again;
it is a great idea and should be part of any building plans
in the future.
In short, there is a felt need to socialize
and centralize this campus, and although the design plans for
an opulent new student center will doubtless solve this problem,
a few simple things like a pool table, a pinball machine and
a bar-style touch-screen video game go a long way. Kudos to
Fr. Beauchamp and the activities board for recognizing the problem
and doing something to address it.
We have only two requests: Please put the
sex trivia game back on the Megatouch Video game in the Ethan
Allen Room, and continue transforming the snack bar into a full-service
bar, with cold draft beer on tap. Please.
