| Frats to debate
Francisco

Sophomore Joe Petrides, a member of the Sigma
Chi fraternity, asked senior Michael Francisco to join in a
public debate to examine the relative merits and demerits of
the Greek system, especially as it affects campus life.
Francisco has been openly critical of the
Greek system on campus in the past, and has questioned certain
aspects of Greek life and activities at the college.
"I hope the debate would cause the student
body to think more about the mission statement of Hillsdale
College," Francisco said, "and whether or not the
Greek system plays a necessary role in that mission."
Petrides said the event is not being approached
as a simple "Greek versus anti-Greek" contest.
"I asked Michael because he is an excellent
speaker and because of his position-he has relevant questions
and critiques," he said. "This is to be an examination
of the positives and negatives of the Greek system."
The debate will take place on April 7 in Phillips
Auditorium, and will be open to questions from the public. Each
panel will have two members who will have a few minutes for
opening remarks, and then a moderator will ask several questions.
Petrides said he may act as moderator for
the event, and is looking at sophomore Dan Greene or senior
Edmund Konsen to represent the Greeks, though because both are
members of Sigma Chi, he will likely choose only one for the
two-man panel. Francisco has yet to choose a partner.
"We want to look closely at the purposes
and causes of the system," Petrides said.
He said they will be putting up flyers with
details at the end of the month, but said word of mouth alone
should draw a crowd.
"This is a question and a discussion
a lot of people are interested in," he said.
