Battle of the beds: Hillsdale has options

Spring Break vacation plans tempt students to see artificial tans

Tanning-it's a two-syllable word thrown around often on Hillsdale College's campus as Spring Break approaches.

Most students have probably seen the cheerleaders' shirts that say, "We Do It In Six Seconds." Members of the cheerleading team wear these shirts at various sporting events to publicize Malibu Tanning of Hillsdale in exchange for free visits.

Two popular tanning spots among students are Malibu and Sun T-ZERS of Jonesville.

"We have a lot-a whole lot of students who tan here," said Heather Hunt, consultant for Malibu.
Malibu receives publicity and the members of the team receive free tanning.

"I tan all year round, not just near Spring Break," cheerleader Ashlee Cullen said. "I take advantage of what I can get."

At Malibu, college students receive a 20 percent discount off any minute package, one month of VIP tanning and 10 percent off lotion.

There are four packages to choose from. The Super Nova Package provides 300 minutes for $150, the Solar Package provides 200 minutes for $100, the Star package provides 100 minutes for $50, and the Lunar Package provides 50 minutes for $25. Each package also offers various VIP minutes.

Malibu also requires an enrollment fee and a monthly fee of $18.88 to begin tanning. Many students take advantage of this low monthly offer.

"Even though we have a lot now, we'll probably see a lot more students as Spring Break gets closer," Hunt said.

Junior Elizabeth Seutter is one of those students now visiting Malibu.

"This is the first time I've tanned in my life, but I'm going to Florida for Spring Break, and I didn't want to get burnt, so I decided to get a base tan before I went down there," she said.

Another popular tanning spot among students is Sun T-ZERS, located in the Wal-Mart plaza.

Manager Andi Paille attributes their popularity to the variety of packages.

Sun T-ZERS offers students one year of tanning for $25 plus a $2.50 service charge for each tanning experience.

Hillsdale students are not the only ones taking advantage of this deal.

"If people bring in any type of college ID, whether it's Jackson or Hillsdale, we'll give them the deal," Paille said.

Sun T-ZERS also offers airbrush tanning, a popular new technique among steady tanners.
"It is a good option for those who are pregnant or even those who have skin cancer," Paille said.
Skin cancer brings up a disadvantage of tanning.
Even though this may deter some students, most seem not to care about the potential threat.
Paille, however, disagrees with the potential danger of tanning.

"From all the seminars I have been to, we've been told that the sun gives off 15 percent UV rays whereas the beds only give off 2 to 5 percent of UV rays. So unless someone is going to stay out of the sun completely, tanning indoors is healthier," she said.

Malibu Tanning provides a variety of tan packages for their clientele.
