Many hours of organization and planning are
an essential part of Hillsdale College's Center for Constructive
Alternatives lecture series.
For the week to run efficiently, student organizers are key.
The work student organizers put into each CCA also adds a personal
touch of the college for speakers and attendees who come from
all over the country.
"Without the students and their good
work, the CCA would not be possible," Tim Caspar, director
of the CCA, said.
Four student leaders are the main organizers
behind the scenes of CCA planning. Seniors Stefani Zimmerman,
Carisa Bergen, junior Emily Stack and sophomore Michaela Goertzen
have numerous responsibilities to aid the week's success.
These four students are seen at each CCA,
helping proctor questions at the end of each speaker, organizing
the preparation and seating for dinners, and taking charge of
the receptions.
"Our main task is to make sure everything
runs smoothly," Zimmerman said. "We help fulfill any
special requests any of our CCA guests might have."
The student organizers also find students
to introduce each speaker at the beginning of each lecture.
Students are selected by the group of student planners, first
looking at a list of the students enrolled in the CCA. The planners
look for student introducers who are involved on campus and
are comfortable speaking in public.
To help break up the workload of the week,
the organizers divide up the sessions and dinners to keep up
with the rest of their regular class work and activities.
"All four of us can usually be found
at the dinners making sure preparation and seating for each
dinner goes as planned," Zimmerman said. "We try to
divide up the different lectures throughout the week."
The leadership team of Zimmerman, Bergen,
Goertzen and Stack are not the only students involved in making
sure each CCA runs smoothly. The women of the Kappa Kappa Gamma
sorority as well as the women of the Pi Beta Phi sorority also
play a role.
"The Kappas are in charge of student
attendance, since a large part of the CCA is just for the students
who are enrolled to show up," Caspar said. "Recently,
the Pi Phis approached me about a leadership position within
the CCA, and they have begun to help at being present at the
different CCA dinners and receptions and spending time chatting
with the different guests that attend the CCA."
"Being at the dinners is so much fun,"
senior Angela Miller, Pi Beta Phi, said. "It is great to
talk to people who love Hillsdale and love to talk with the
students of Hillsdale. It is a really neat and different perspective
of the CCA experience."
