Oberlin Talks Back
Dear Editor,
If you feel the desire to post criticisms
of my school based upon your glancing at old copies of some
newspaper, I hope you have the guts to post this response in
its entirety. Just because we believe in proven science instead
of regurgitating outdated fundamentalism, which is like the
rhetoric of terrorists only it replaces "Allah" with
"Jeeezus."
Clearly, had you read the Bible, you would
be aware of love and tolerance for others, which are Christian
values Oberlin supports, which you are obviously not concerned
with. You might also be concerned with the poor, meek, and sick,
but I suppose you spend so much time putting protesters down,
you ignore those closest to God. Your religious elitism is nothing
short of a total stray from the humble and simple humanity of
Jesus. Instead of spending our time attacking random other colleges
in different states, we actually get something done besides
football.
Because some of us know enough about the current
situation to have and express opinions, you have no right to
judge the value of our activities. Furthermore, unlike at your
completely white, closed-minded, and ignorant school, we do
not force other students to follow a set of archaic rules, and
welcome people of all types equally. In our classrooms we disagree,
and you will meet conservatives here as well as liberals, but
what makes us unique is even those who agree with you are open-minded
enough to listen and learn from new opinions.
While you run for safety from the modern world
to your strict parents, we embrace change and difference, even
such as in the case of the drag ball. There are some people
who are gay here, and I am not, but I would rather support other
people's right to live their own lives than judge based on ignorance
and hate. If this threatens you, I hope you do not lose too
much sleep as to ruin your once-a-year sock hop. As to our academics,
look at our ratings. When you finally learn about evolution,
give me a call.
Sincerely,
T. N.
Dear Editor,
You and your staff may find a real visit to
Oberlin more helpful than surfing the archives of our online
newspaper. I've been at Oberlin for four years, and not even
I would be audacious enough to fallaciously generalize about
the education and politics of 3,000 students! (You did it after
reading four articles!)
Don't we all deserve higher standards than
that?
Sincerely,
Michael Gallope
