Theft provokes dorm lockdown

Campus security has ordered a lockdown of Galloway Hall in light of a recent larceny, according to Galloway House Director Lois Knape.

One sign posted in the dorm in red, black and blue lettering reads: "Attention. All outside doors will be locked indefinitely. Take your keys with you at all times."

The incident itself happened while freshman Sean O'Donnell was at track practice on Tuesday, Jan. 13. According to police reports, a local man made an unforced entry between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. into O'Donnell's room on the first floor of Galloway, stealing $70 from his wallet.

"They're [security] afraid he's coming back this week or something, but it's just a safety precaution-nothing to get worried about," Knape said.

Senior Lee Cole spotted the local man and told O'Donnell's roommate, freshman Chris Sleeper. When O'Donnell returned from practice, Sleeper told him of the incident and when he checked his wallet he found the money missing.

O'Donnell then told Knape, who called campus security, who then called the police.

"We did it the way we're supposed to do it," Knape said.

Hillsdale Police currently have no suspect, but Chris Gutowski, Hillsdale police director of public safety, described the man as around age 40, 5 feet 8 inches and 145 pounds with short, brown hair.

Gutowski said he is advising students to make sure they lock their doors and windows when not in their rooms.
