You know you are reading a good newspaper
if the writers are winning awards, right?
Reporters from Hillsdale College's Collegian
took home top awards in the Michigan Press Association College
Newspaper contest.
Collegian writers Colleen McGinness, Jacob
Harrison, Emma Tocci, John Davidson and Will Farnham received
top honors for their witing.
"I think three first place awards in
top categories is impressive, especially for a school of 1,200
competing against schools with students of more than 10,000,"
said the Dow Journalism Program Faculty Adviser Joy Spencer.
Hillsdale College was placed in Division II
with such schools as Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, Grand
Valley State and Oakland.
From this division, Collegian opinions editor
John Davidson took first place in best non-deadline story for
his work, "Former Delts Placed on Social Probation."
Also in this category, Jacob Harrison took third place for his
localization of a national story about Hurricane Isabel.
News editor Colleen McGinness took two first
place awards for her work in features and sports writing.
"A powerful piece about learning is not
all attending classes. A true example of what a feature story
should be. I was taken on a trip, brought back and was given
reasons to reflect back to it, all again. I wished I was there,"
wrote one judge of McGinness' article, "Far Off Lands."
Reporter Emma Tocci took second place in features
with a story about the Hillsdale County auction.
In the review category, Will Farnham took
second place in this division for his portrayal of the movie
Kill Bill.
"There's some exceptional work being
done by some exceptional students
These papers clearly
serve their institutions, readers and advertisers well,"
said Michael MacLaren, executive director of the MPA in a press
release.
