'Rosenstrasse' receives
recognition

The story of loyalty, love and hope triumphed
again as Hillsdale College staged Rosentrasse for its third
production Saturday at the American College Theatre Festival
(ACTF).
The cast headed to Illinois State University
in Normal, Ill., Friday morning and began mental preparation
for the next day's events, which included two performances for
a panel of judges and a feedback session.
Freshman Rhiannon Angell, who played the daughter
of a Jewish man trapped in Rosenstrasse, said she was excited
about the festival and confident in the cast's ability to perform
well.
"I think the show is excellent and we
do a pretty good job with the technical aspects of the production,"
she said. "Especially for a theater of our size, we have
a well-rounded show."
Hillsdale's production of Rosentrasse was
one of only eight shows chosen from over 100 college and universities
in a five-state range. One of the eight will be chosen to compete
at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, the
ACTF national convention and the Kennedy Center in Washington,
D.C. this April. The results of the festival have not been announced
yet.
Senior Jennica Slattery, who played Lise,
the Gentile wife of a Jewish man, said the biggest critique
the group received was a lack of focus.
"We didn't have the disciplined focus
that a lot of other actors from other, larger schools had,"
she said. "I think they could tell we're not a big theater
school."
Several of the cast members left for Illinois
a day early to compete for the Irene Ryans Award, including
Slattery, junior Michael Simpson, senior Amy Jokinen and senior
Julie Hershberger. None made it beyond the preliminary round.
