New rule requires frats to initiate at same time

Students of Hillsdale College may have seen several men roaming the halls in a straight line with uniform steps and booklets in their hands as initiation arrived last week for Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau Omega and Delta Sigma Phi pledges.

In the early morning hours, each sorority house on campus may have heard the half-groans of certain pledges serenading them awake.

"It's tradition and they do it every year. I find it enjoyable," senior Keren Casciani said.

Previously, only pledges of the Sigma Chi fraternity were initiated at the beginning of the spring semester, but that changed with the start of the 2003-2004 school year.

"We entered the year with certain standards to make everything uniform," Dean of Men Aaron Petersen said. In order to be able to go through initiation week, pledges must have maintained a 2.35 GPA in their first semester of classes.

Previously, that number had been a 2.25, indicating raised standards for the fraternity system.

If these grades are not met, the men have one semester to improve their GPA. During this time they are referred to as a "superpledge."

The early rush and pledge schedule for the fraternities also increases the chance of numbers rising for the men.

"This schedule works for us right now. We don't foresee any problems with it and hope to get our numbers up in the future," said junior Dave Danic, ATO president.
Previously holding their own, the Sigma Chi actives do not seem to be bothered by the other fraternities initiating their new pledges all in the same week.

"We really don't run into each other so it's not that different for us," said Sigma Chi sophomore John Smith.

Sigma Chi pledges marched to all group functions last week in a single-file line. All three fraternitys initiated their members in a new attempt to cultivate uniformity in the Greek system.
