Fall Formal finds new venue

This year's Fall Formal, held on Nov. 22,
took place in the newly constructed Howard Music Hall.
Attendants entered on rose petals, which had
been strewn throughout the main hallway. The decorations included
fishbowls with floating candles and fish swimming beneath the
flame as centerpieces for the tables.
"I tried to stay simple with the decorations
because the Howard Music Hall is so beautiful already,"
said Yvonne Boatman, the Student Activities Board representative
in charge of decorations.
The Couriers, a traditional swing big band,
took the main performance zone, and the Who Dat Band, a local
blues band, occupied a specially set up niche at the anterior
end of the main hallway.
"We've done, in the last five years,
two [Hillsdale performances] a year," said Dan Raglin,
the Couriers' band manager.
Raglin said he was impressed with the new venue.
"Beautiful building," Raglin said.
"The rear entrance is very nice, easy access-it's like
somebody finally thought of the musicians."
At the other end of the main hallway, the
Who Dat Band returned for their second performance at a Hillsdale
College event, performing in the Hillsdale College Parents'
Association Student Gallery Lobby and Lounge.
The band, comprised mostly of Hillsdale alumni,
performed classic rock and blues songs, as well as some original
compositions. While the band had a smaller performance area,
they still drew an audience.
"The Who Dat Band is a favorite of mine,
they provide a nice change," Fr. Duane Beauchamp said.
The Howard building lent itself well to the
demands of the all-school event.
"It looked like it had been put together
for different live groups, which was impressive," sophomore
Bryce Horswell said. "It was a step up, at least from last
year. The music was by far the best thing about it."
Members of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and
Sigma Chi fraternity were in charge of set-up and takedown.
"Ultimately, the best part of the night
was when the Sigma Chi house came to help us clean up and spent
half an hour sweeping, mopping and rearranging. My board would
have been there a few hours if it weren't for them," Student
Activities Board President Rachel Rock said.
"Never in my college career have we had
such a great response and I can honestly say it is because of
the change in setting," Rock said.
