Sayers on the Sidelines

From underdogs to champions
I have to say that I completely underestimated the Florida Marlins' ability, talent and desire. Apart from Josh Becket's masterful five-hit shutout to clinch the series, the Marlins truly impressed me with their resilience, toughness and fearlessness. In a series where the only people who thought they could win were themselves, Florida out-hit, out-pitched, out-thought and out-played the Yankees.

BCS could get complicated
For now, the Bowl Championship Series is safe. The two remaining undefeated teams will go on to play in the National Championship game at the end of the season. My question is, what is the BCS going to do if either Miami or Oklahoma loses? Since its inauguration, the BCS has been lucky in having two undefeated teams to play each other in the championship, but I don't think it will happen this year. This weekend both Miami and Oklahoma face their toughest tests of the season, with Oklahoma meeting Oklahoma State and Miami playing an angry Viginia Tech team. If just one of them loses, it will create utter chaos in the college football world. Ten teams will then be able to make a strong argument for their playing in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. How will college football be able to clear up this mess? What will happen when a team does not play for the National Championship because of a computer and a hundredth of a decimal place? These are serious questions that college football needs to address, and I don't think that the BCS is the answer.

Weekend Predictions
     MIAMI-20, VA. TECH-28
After Miami played a too-close-for-comfort game against West Virginia, the Canes came back and won a big game against Florida State. Now the Hokies do the same thing by winning a HUGE game against Miami, creating mass hysteria in the college football world.
     MICHIGAN-27, MICH. ST.-30
The Wolverines' defense has been shaky against good teams this year, and Jeff Smoker is arguably the best quarterback in the Big Ten. A close game throughout, but Smoker and home field advantage propel State to the win.
     OKLAHOMA-41, OKLA. ST.-37
Oklahoma State won their last two meetings with the Sooners, but the streak stops here. With a suffocating defense and a revamped offense, which includes a rejuvenated Jason White at quarterback, the Sooners win a nail-biter over the Cowboys.
