Registration outdated, inefficent

The campus is abuzz this week as students traipse about searching for college faculty members to sign schedule cards so they can pre-register for classes. Every semester Hillsdale students go through the same strange process of shuffling about slips of paper from one administrative office to another, as though we do not have the technology to accomplish these tasks using "laser beams" and "computer chips."
One example will suffice: A student applying to take an independent study must track down and obtain actual signatures from as many as five different faculty and staff members before bringing the application back to the registrar.
We think a system of Internet or telephone registration, widely employed by community colleges and universities nationwide, is long overdue at Hillsdale College. The current system is an unnecessary burden on students, faculty and staff. Let the laser beams and computer chips do this work for us. They get the job done quickly, those lasers.
