Students walk for life

Pro-life activists
are finding something to celebrate after the Senate passed legislation
to ban partial-birth abortion Oct. 21. President George W. Bush
is planning to sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk.
The bill prohibits abortion normally
carried out during the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
The House of Representatives approved the bill earlier this
month and Bush has urged Congress to get the bill to his desk.
Celebrations over the legislation
were not just at a national level.
Many local Hillsdale residents
joined together Sunday afternoon for the Life Walk, sponsored
by the Alpha Omega Women's Care Center.
Nearly 125 community members joined
in the cause to raise money for Hillsdale County's only crisis
pregnancy center. About 25 Hillsdale College students took one
hour out of their day to walk for the cause.
"I'm not studying for my
midterm because I feel that this is something that I need to
do," senior Sara Kosik said. "There are people who
are on the border between pro-life and pro-choice and I think
it would help to change their minds if they saw us walking."
Those who chose to walk were encouraged
to raise money through sponsors. The money the sponsors donate
goes toward purchasing supplies such as diapers, baby clothes,
formula and pregnancy tests to aid those who come to the center
for help. The event raised nearly
$5,000, which was almost double what the walk earned last year.
The funds raised also support
the Concerned About Teen Sexuality program that consists of
many Hillsdale College students and local high school students.
"Our main goal is to reach
people before they need to come into the center," said
Kelly Heinz, a Life Walk coordinator. "Our CATS program
is one of the ways we can do this. We don't want there to be
a stereotype of the people we help."
Founded in 1987, the center is
located at 49 S. Howell St. and is open to anyone. The center
is operated by volunteers who offer confidential pro-life counseling,
free pregnancy tests and women's Bibles.
