Royalty crowned, alumni come home

Enthusiasm ran high Saturday when alumni returned to their alma mater and current students basked in school spirit.      From a car show to a choir performance to the football game, smiling people participated in the campus festivities.
The annual alumni choir sang on the steps of Central Hall in the late morning, drawing a crowd. Immediately after the casual performance was a pie-throwing fundraiser sponsored by the International Justice Mission.
At the football game, Karl Anderson, an independent, and Coral Shaw, of Kappa Kappa Gamma, were crowned Homecoming King and Queen at halftime.
Even an hour after she was crowned, Shaw, a math major from Traverse City, Mich., was still glowing.
"It's such an honor. I was so surprised," Shaw said. "It's so overwhelming, so exciting to see all my friends cheering for me."
Shaw's parents, Doug and Barb, were there to support her, and she said she was excited they came.
Anderson, a political economy major from Angola, Ind., was shocked to be chosen as well. His parents, Gordon and Daphne, were also able to attend the game to see their son crowned.
"It was really nerve-wracking because I don't like being in front of people," Anderson said. "But I was really, really excited that people voted and thought I was worthy of such a title."
Independent court member Sara Kosik was pleased to be part of the festivities.
"I was honestly tickled," she said. "It was just nice to be thought of. Just to be on the court was an honor even without winning."
Independent court member Jonathan Brunick had been out of town all week for religious reasons and was unaware he had even been nominated for Homecoming King. He returned Sunday afternoon to discover what he had missed.
"I would have loved to have been here. I am very flattered my friends would consider me. I didn't know I was on court," Brunick said.
A large spectrum of alumni from distant decades to the most recent came to join the festivities. Many brought with them new spouses or tiny, diapered additions to their families.
These alumni flocked to the game, which was heightened by the efforts of the Pep Band, the Pit Posse and the glistening pompoms of the cheerleaders.
"I played basketball here and it's nice to have everyone around for the weekend," Erin Dowd, '00, said.
"It's funny going down the sidewalk-it took an hour [because of seeing old friends]," said Jen (Lewis) Boon, '03.
"It's great to see new faces and old friends - nice to talk to alumni," Beth Schienke, '03, said.
Sororities held luncheons on Saturday to welcome alumni. Susannah Luthi, a junior and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, said she enjoyed the casual luncheon at her sorority.
"We have people from all different years come back, particularly from the 50s and 60s," she said.
A big draw for those not even involved in Homecoming was the second annual Homecoming Car Show, which drew plenty of attention with its elaborate display of 120 hot rods and collector cars ranging from the 1920s to a Millenium edition Corvette.
Organized by Patricia Lennox, secretary of the alumni office, car show contestants judged each others' cars, choosing the top 15 cars. A People's Choice Award was chosen by spectators who were not contestants.
     "Anyone can enter," she said.
They did. Contestants were not only from Hillsdale and neighboring towns but from as far away as Ohio, Indiana and Lansing.
Makai Nance, KKG, might have been able to speak for many students and alumni when she said: "Today's a very good day. I'm very happy."

The second annual car show featured 120 cars from 1920 to 2003. The cars lined College Street and filled the Central Hall parking lots.
