The Charger
volleyball team continued its balanced attack with a 2-1 record
during Fall Break.
Hillsdale is now 14-10 overall
and 6-4 in the GLIAC.
Junior setter Karin Poschke was
a big factor in Hillsdale's success this weekend, and on Monday
she was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.
Poschke leads the league with
an average of 12.09 assists per game and already has more than
1,000 assists for the season.
Hillsdale dropped a 1-3 decision
to undefeated Northern Michigan on Saturday.
Northern Michigan, now 13-0 overall,
is enjoying the second-longest winning streak in its volleyball
history.
The Chargers posted a convincing
3-0 win over Michigan Tech on Friday.
They fell behind early but never
let Michigan Tech get within five points after taking over the
first game.
On Sunday Hillsdale rallied against
Lake Superior State after losing the first game and won, 3-1.
The Chargers went 1-1 on Oct.
4, defeating Ashland, 3-1, and falling to Findlay, 3-2.
Hillsdale came out slow against
Ashland, losing the first game, 14-30.
But they regrouped and won the
next two games, and the fourth game ended after several intense
rallies.
The Chargers held off Ashland's
late surge with kills by freshman Taryn Rudland and junior Karin
Poschke, plus two blocks in the last seven points of the match.
Rudland, Poschke and four other attackers all recorded nine
or more kills in the match.
Junior Erin Bartee, freshman Tessa
Bloemers and senior Amanda Proctor combined for 56 digs.
Hillsdale lost a heartbreaker
to Findlay, 2-3, earlier in the day.
The loss also had a big impact
on team leadership, as senior Sarah Spaulding went down with
an ankle injury in the first game.
Spaulding will be out for the
rest of the year and underwent surgery last Friday.
The team changed their focus after
their senior captain was hurt.
"We want to win for her sake
now," Bloemers said.
The team made a valiant effort
in the loss to Findlay, ending up only two points short of a
victory.
Rudland and freshman Katherine
Jones led the Chargers with 16 kills, and three more attackers
were in double digits.
Even sophomore defensive specialist
Sumer Way had four kills.
The Chargers will host GLIAC rivals
Grand Valley State at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, and play Ferris State
at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
