a winless season

Despite
playing three of their past four matches at home, the Charger
tennis team still has been unable to win. As their season has
started to wrap up, the team has begun to focus on what needs
to change for next year.
"We need to be more aggressive
in our recruitment for next year," junior Lisa Adams said.
"We are hoping that by recruiting more players for next
season we will be able to increase our skill level."
This season's players, along with
coach Sue Abel, plan to work together to find players for next
season.
"We want to find some good
girls that can appreciate the kind of education they will receive
at Hillsdale as well as enjoy playing tennis at a smaller school,"
Abel said.
The team lost, 7-2, against Wayne
State on Sept. 29.
Junior Jessie Miller, No. 1 singles
player, won her match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, and Miller and Adams won
their No. 1 doubles match, 8-3.
"Wayne State was one of the
best matches we have played," Adams said. "Even though
we lost the match, we all have really strengthened our playing
relationship with each of our doubles partners. Earlier in the
season we had to do some switching around, but now we are all
playing well together."
The Chargers hosted their next
three matches. On Oct. 4, the Chargers lost, 8-1, to Michigan
Tech. Sophomore Audrey Gonzales, No. 5 singles player, won her
match due to a forfeit by Michigan Tech's No. 5 player.
The next day the Chargers lost
to Lake Superior State, 8-1. Miller won her No. 1 singles match,
6-2, 6-2.
Last Friday, the team lost, 8-1,
to Saginaw Valley State. Junior Maralissa Mallett, No. 4 singles,
won her match.
"It was another very long
match," Abel said. "We
just couldn't come up with a win."
The Chargers will host their final
match of their season against Northwood at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
Oct. 21.
