Golf driving range arrives

As students made their way back to campus this fall, many were surprised to see something new at 3883 Carleton Road.
Silos Driving Range, opened June 14, has been doing steady business since its opening.
The range features high-powered lights that stay on until 11 p.m., making it easier for golf enthusiasts to get in some extra practice swings.
"It's really nice for those who get out of work later on," owner Dan Cleveland said. "It also changes the pace for those around the Hillsdale area. It's great recreation for families and an inexpensive date for younger people."
The balls are dispensed from an automated machine and prices range from $3 to $10 depending on the bucket size. There is also an opportunity to get cheaper rates through a VIP membership. By depositing $20 onto a membership card, one can get a larger bucket for less money.
The driving range is the first phase of what Cleveland said he hopes will be an entertainment complex. Plans are being made to convert the old mill next to the range into a casual dining restaurant.
"There still are a couple of issues to wrinkle out," Cleveland said. "If construction can start this fall, it will be open in February or so. If the construction doesn't work for the fall, it will most definitely be started in the spring."
The restaurant will also include indoor sporting events, a golf simulator and a variety of food.
An 18-hole miniature golf course will be added and is scheduled to open in May.
Cleveland also plans to expand the area for the driving range because of its popularity.
"The tee off isn't big enough and we're having trouble growing back grass," he said. "We will probably be adding turf at the back of the tees because we want a top notch facility."
The range will close sometime in October depending on weather and will reopen in April.
