Fines result in rules at Roxy

Todd Huffman, owner of Hillsdale's popular bar, the Roxy, has had enough of fines.
After a number of students were recently slapped with citations for underage drinking outside his establishment, Huffman tightened policies.
Contrary to rumor, Thursday's popular College Night still exists, but minors are now required to wear different colored wristbands than students who are 21 and older.
"If I catch someone without a wristband on, they're out," Huffman said. "If I see a minor with a cup full of beer, they're out."
Those who disregard the management's rules will be removed from the premises with no warning.
Huffman said the choice to clamp down on minors was strictly a business decision, since fines were exceeding the generated income.
Huffman, who has been in charge of the establishment since it was renovated in 1999, said the changes only affect minors.
He said that when police handed out citations in front of the building, the students blamed the Roxy management. Huffman said he thinks the minors did the majority of their drinking before they got to the Roxy.
Huffman, who has been in Hillsdale for four years and has also worked with Albion College, which has used the Roxy for private parties, said he has never had a problem before.
"If we have another problem, [minors inclusion in College Night] will be discontinued completely," Huffman said.
"I think that it is unfortunate that the Roxy even had to clamp down on their policies, because it wasn't so much the Roxy, but probably upperclassmen who gave underclassmen drinks," sophomore McKenzie Miller said.      "The Roxy will probably lose a lot of money and business because of it."
Despite the changes, the Roxy still offers events for minors. On Friday and Saturday nights, karaoke is open to anyone 18 and older for $4, or $3 with a college ID card. There is also a disc jockey mix on Saturday for the same age group and price.
