Golf team improves by 14 strokes

The Hillsdale College golf team participated
in two tournaments last weekend. On Friday the team played in
the Lake Superior State Invitational at Bay Mills Golf Course
in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Out of the five teams represented,
the Chargers won third place with a composite score of 320,
improving last year's total by 14 strokes.
"We are doing a lot better than last year," coach
Sam Hargraves said about his team's performance. Sophomore Rob
Schlitts tied for second overall, shooting a 72. He finished
only one stroke behind the overall winner. Other notable finishes
included seniors Drew Piazza (86) and Billy Spratt (94), along
with freshmen Mike Ketelaar (80) and B.J. Krech (82). Wayne
State won the invitational with a score of 307.
On Saturday and Sunday, the men played in the Northern Michigan
University Tournament at Wawonowin Country Club in Marquette,
Mich. Hillsdale took fourth out of six teams with a combined
score of 628, improving 25 strokes from last year's appearance.
After the first day of competition, the Chargers were only eight
strokes behind the leaders; however, Grand Valley State pulled
away in the second day of competition, winning with a total
score of 607.
Hillsdale finished behind Grand Valley, Wisconsin Parkside (607),
and Wayne State (608). Other teams represented were Lake Superior
State (629) and Northern Michigan (630). Krech led the team
with a total score of 153. Piazza scored a 157, both Schlitts
and Ketelaar shot a 159, and Spratt finished with a 168.
This weekend the team travels to Ferris State and Grand Valley
State.
