Going out with Greco

By Nicole Greco
Collegian Reporter

From pillowcases that nearly burst at the seams from the weight of the night’s collected candy to elaborately contrived costumes that never cease to exceed my expectations, Halloween has always been a holiday that I anticipate well before I mark my papers with the date October 31st.

Although I no longer spend the evening prancing around the neighborhood soliciting treats from door to door or spend countless hours spreading out my stash all over the living room floor in attempts to persuade my younger siblings that two Snickers in exchange for a few lousy lollipops is a smart trade, I still celebrate the holiday with the same zeal I exhibited in my childhood. Whether I’m passing out treats to classmates, carving pumpkins with the girls in my sorority or fashioning an ensemble for the evening, I relish every second of Halloween activities.

Unlike other holidays you don’t have to attend a monsterly bash or spend fist fulls of money or hours crafting a present to celebrate.

Simply enjoy the day by making caramel apples with your friends, passing out candy to children and watching their faces light up or telling ghost stories around a campfire and you’ll be sure to have a Halloween worth remembering.

If you’re looking for a pumpkin to carve, you won’t find one in town.

However, if you’re willing to take a 10 minute trek from campus and head out to Glei’s Orchards and Greenhouses on Milnes Road, you’ll find one of the best bargains in town: Buy one, get one free.

A fall semester at Hillsdale wouldn’t be complete without the annual Me Kong party so take part in this tradition by donning your camo’ and military garb and snaking down to the Delt house from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Saturday night.

Besides heeding to the words of the Beastie Boys to “fight for your right,” you’ll also be able to catch a live band at this year’s celebration of independence.

Searching for a costume party where you’ll be awarded for your creation? Look no further because the Roxy is sponsoring a contest for the best male and female costumes on Friday night. Regular admission.

Attention all you cool cats and swingers: The Lindy Hop swing dance workshop will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday in the snack bar.

Cost for Saturday and Sunday is $40 for members and $45 for nonmembers for both days or $25 for members and $27 for nonmembers for Saturday only.

Pay tribute to the women’s soccer team by coming to cheer them on as they take on Northern Michigan at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the Charger’s last home game. Yeah, Spohn!

Congratulations on being the only player to have never missed a game throughout your four year college career.

You’ll always have a gold star in my book.

For all those enrolled in music appreciation classes, time is running out to fulfill your concert attendance requirements so don’t miss out on Wednesday’s Violin and Piano performance at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Markel. Works by Schubert, Beethoven and others highlight the event.
