Hillsdale Women's Swimming 2004-05 Season-In-Review

It has been an extremely exciting swimming season for the Hillsdale Chargers this year as our team has grown in size and talent! Our season concluded with the GLIAC Conference Swimming and Diving Championships hosted at Wayne State University.

Throughout the season, we broke 3 school records and 1 pool record we posted 30 best times at the Conference meet and 27 lifetime best swims. We also produced 9 NCAA “B” time standards in the 100 and 200 Fly, the 100 and 200 Back, the 200 and 400IM's as well as the 1000 free, the 1650 Free and the 50 Free.

We finished the Conference meet with an all time high score of 330 points! This is 100 points above last years GLIAC finish! Junior Cylie Hoopingarner broke the Wayne State pool record for the women’s 200 Butterfly in a time trail with a time of 2:09.00 and also broke the Wayne State pool record in the 100 Back with a time of 59.22. Freshman Tyler Patterson won the 200 Fly and took third in both the 200 and 400IM’s. Cylie took second in the 100 and 200 Back as well as the 100 butterfly. Senior Julia Parsons took 4th in the 1000 Free and 5th in the 1650 and 500 Freestyles.

Additionally, for the first time in my history with the College all five of our relay’s this year placed in the top six! Please feel free to check out our web site for complete results!

On Friday February 25, 2005 Junior Cylie Hoopingarner and Sophomore Amanda Smith traveled to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana for the Indiana
University Open Invitational. This was a Last Chance Meet for Division I and Division II institutions and their swimmers to make a final attempt at obtaining an “A” time standard for entrance into the NCAA Championships. In addition to Hillsdale College, the meet was attended by Indiana University, Ohio State University, Western Kentucky University, George Washington University, Ashland University and The University of Indianapolis.

Cylie Hoopingarner swam the 100 and 200 yard backstrokes along with the 100 yard Butterfly and the 100 meter backstroke. Amanda Smith swam the 50 yard free and the 50 meter free. Although Hillsdale did not obtain an “A” cut, Cylie established a new school record in the 100 yard Backstroke with a time of 59.11 and Amanda swam a season best 50 yard free with a time of 24.70.

We currently have four signed/committed freshman for next season and with our second signing date in April, this number will increase. When all is said and done Hillsdale College swimming could have 12-14 entering freshman for the 2005-2006 school year!

Following Spring break, the Hillsdale Swimming team embarks on Spring training. This will be a combination of water training, strength training, revisiting and resetting goals for both the summer season and next fall! Our team banquet is scheduled for Sunday April 24, 2005 at 1pm in the Dow Center.
