SCI 101 web site provides computer assisted help for Science 101 students. It may be utilized any time of day or night from any computer with internet access. Study aids are indicated in the column on your left. Each time you select an option a page will open. When you complete that selection you may return to the Science 101 page by using the "Go" menu in the menu bar and pull down to Science 101. The "Terms" page opens in a separate window. You may leave it open at all times if you wish. Note that special instructions for the 3D Molecules page are included on its first page.
- Terms -The study of chemistry is highly vocabulary dependent and one must be familiar with its language in order to understand chemical concepts.
- Concepts -These are the main topics covered in lecture and/or in your book. Students should be familiar with each concept before an exam over that section. Look up or ask your professor about any concepts that are unclear.
- Tutorials -These are short illustrations of tasks that students should be able to perform. The ability to carry out the Practice Exercises is often dependent upon an understanding of the tutorials.
- Practice Exercises -These are short self-tests that students may print out and use as study exercises. Check your answers against a key provided by your instructor.
- 3D Molecules -These are molecules rendered using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). They are meant help students visualize how 2-dimensional structural formulas would appear using 3-dimensional "ball and stick" configurations. Netscape 3 or an equivalent browser with the Live3D plug-in is necessary to view VRML structures. Read the instructions on the top of the first page for this section.
- Faculty -Information about the faculty teaching each of the four sections of this course.
- Chemfinder -This link takes you to the Chemfinder page of CambridgeSoft. This company produces several software products for chemists and also maintains a chemical database that lists the properties of many chemicals. To find information about a chemical: click on the Chemfinder link, enter its chemical name or formula, and click on Submit. Other sites with information about the chemical will also be listed.
- The Macrogalleria is a virtual shopping mall that features polymers. It bills itself as a cyberwonderland of polymer fun.
- Internet Resources - This site is maintained by Dr. Tom O'Haver at the University of Maryland. It contains numerous connecting links to other useful chemistry sites.
- Yahoo Chemistry - One of the better commercial sites for chemistry. Contains a large listing of related chemistry sites and use of the Yahoo search engine.
- Chemical Industry Home Page - This site contains a link to chemical company web sites and access to chemistry search engines.
- Web Elements - This site contains all of the information that you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask, about the elements in the periodic chart.
